With a new home but an empty backyard, the clients wanted a place where they could both entertain and relax. With just a plain, grassy base, we had free reign to create a space that felt welcoming and timeless.
APPROACHING THE CHALLENGE
To maintain the balance between entertainment and leisure, we took a ‘best of both worlds’ approach, with a modern classic look that would age well. We used free-flowing curves for a cool but inviting look, challenging ourselves to create deeper levels of detail in a short amount of time.
We created a sunken fire pit as the entertainment area’s centerpiece, with a custom feature screen that continued onto a free-flowing curve around the back of the pit.
We built a post box using the same travertine tile featured in the backyard. We mirrored the home’s angled roof with that of the post box and completed it with a LED strip light recessed into the natural stone capping.
To allow the foliage in the background to stand out, we cut the tops off each timber post at a 22.5 degree angle. This also allows for water to cleanly run off and preserve the timber.
For a discreet look, we added built-in custom planters over the post box, which will grow out in time and spill over the feature for a softer and more unique appearance.
